Personal Training & Coaching · Carlsbad, CA

Barbell strength training in Carlsbad.

Barbell strength training is one-on-one coaching in the squat, press, bench press and deadlift, with simple progression and a program adapted to your body, experience and goals. It is personal training built around skill and measurable progress in Carlsbad Village.

Coaching launches with the club. Founding members get first access and priority scheduling. Leave your details and a coach will reach out.

A Simple Approach to Building Real Strength

Practice a few lifts. Add load over time.

Barbell strength training develops the ability to produce force through progressively loaded, full-body movements. Instead of changing the workout every week, you practice a small group of lifts, improve technique and add resistance as your strength and confidence grow.

Our approach draws from foundational barbell principles popularized in Mark Rippetoe's book Starting Strength: prioritize compound lifts, use a practical progression and make adjustments based on the lifter in front of the coach. It is personal training built around skill and measurable progress, not random intensity.

A note on Starting Strength

Carlsbad Athletic Club is not affiliated with Starting Strength, LLC. Starting Strength is referenced only to identify the book and training principles that inspired portions of this independent coaching service. We do not represent our trainers as Starting Strength Coaches unless a coach separately earns and maintains that credential.

The Primary Barbell Lifts

Four movements, coached well.

Lower Body
Squat

Train the legs, hips and trunk through a full-body movement pattern.

Overhead
Press

Build overhead strength, balance and whole-body control.

Upper Body
Bench Press

Develop upper-body pressing strength with consistent setup and technique.

Pull
Deadlift

Build strength for lifting from the floor while learning to manage position and load.

Supplemental
Pulling & Power

Added when they fit your experience, mobility and goals.

How Your Program Progresses

Measured progress, not guesswork.

  1. Assessment and starting point. We review goals, health history, prior lifting experience and relevant movement limitations.
  2. Lift instruction. Your coach teaches setup, bar path, bracing, range of motion and the cues that work best for you.
  3. Appropriate starting loads. You begin light enough to practice consistent technique while still creating a useful training stimulus.
  4. Progressive loading. Weight, repetitions or programming complexity increase as you demonstrate readiness.
  5. Individual adjustments. Exercise variations, warm-ups and progression rates change when age, training history, recovery or mobility requires it.
  6. Periodic review. We track completed work and update the plan using performance rather than guesswork.
Who Barbell Personal Training Is For

From first lift to lasting strength.

The lifts on this page are the same movements studied for bone health. In the LIFTMOR and LIFTMOR-M trials, older adults with low bone mass who trained the deadlift, squat and press under supervision improved bone mineral density at the spine and hip while building strength, with a strong safety record. Training is always screened and progressed for the individual.

Barbell training vs. circuit training

Circuit training moves quickly through many exercises for general conditioning. Barbell strength training practices a small group of compound lifts with coached technique and progressive load, so the goal is measurable strength rather than a high-variety workout.

What to Expect in Your First Session

Leave with a starting point and a plan.

A method is useful only when it can be coached safely and practically. Limb proportions, training age, injury history, available range of motion, schedule and recovery all affect how a lift should be taught and progressed. For a broader, capability-focused option, compare functional strength and mobility training, or reinforce your plan with DXA body composition to track muscle and body composition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barbell training, answered.

Is this an official Starting Strength program?
No. Carlsbad Athletic Club's program is inspired by foundational barbell principles described in Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength, but the club is not affiliated with Starting Strength, LLC and does not represent its trainers as Starting Strength Coaches unless a coach separately earns and maintains that credential.
Do I need barbell experience?
No. Beginners are an excellent fit because early coaching can establish consistent setup, range of motion and lifting habits before heavier loads are introduced.
Will I have to lift heavy on the first day?
No. The first session is about learning and establishing an appropriate starting point. Progress comes from adding load gradually after you can perform the movement with repeatable technique.
Is barbell training safe for adults over 50 or 60?
Many adults can strength train successfully at older ages when the exercises, starting loads and progression are appropriately selected. Share health concerns with your coach and obtain medical clearance when advised.
How often should I train?
Many strength programs use two or three weekly sessions, but the right frequency depends on experience, goals, schedule and recovery. Your coach will recommend a practical starting cadence.
Can you coach only one lift?
Yes. Technique sessions for the squat, deadlift, press or bench press can stand alone, although ongoing coaching provides more opportunity to reinforce technique and manage progression.
