Cold Exposure With a Clear Protocol

Controlled, not a test of toughness.

A cold plunge is a brief period of controlled cold-water immersion. The experience is simple, but colder and longer are not automatically better. Follow the facility temperature, time limits and entry guidance rather than treating the session as a test of toughness.

Clients use cold plunge for the experience of cold exposure, post-training recovery preferences, or as one part of a broader recovery routine.

What Is Contrast Therapy?

Alternating heat and cold.

Contrast therapy alternates controlled heat and cold exposure. At Carlsbad Athletic Club, the experience can pair sauna with cold plunge using a defined sequence and reasonable limits. The exact format will be published once the room, schedule and safety protocol are finalized.

What to Expect

Enter gradually, exit when you need to.

  1. Review the safety guidance and disclose relevant health conditions before the session.
  2. Prepare with the required clothing, towel and hydration.
  3. Enter the cold plunge gradually and follow the posted time and temperature protocol.
  4. Exit immediately if you feel faint, confused, excessively numb or otherwise unwell.
  5. Warm gradually, or continue to the next supervised contrast phase when booked.
Timing depends on your goal

Some athletes prefer cold immersion after competition or high-volume endurance work. People prioritizing strength and muscle adaptation may separate frequent cold immersion from resistance training. Align recovery choices with your program rather than a universal rule.

Further Reading

A starting point for the evidence on cold exposure and recovery. We link peer-reviewed sources and our own research notes so you can read further, not marketing claims.

These sources are provided for education. They describe general research findings and are not medical advice or a promise of specific results. Cold immersion can blunt some strength and hypertrophy adaptations if used heavily around resistance training, which is why timing should match your goals.
