Measure your aerobic capacity instead of relying only on a wearable estimate. VO2 max testing at Carlsbad Athletic Club evaluates how effectively your body uses oxygen during progressively harder exercise, and turns the results into practical training guidance.

What a VO2 Max Test Measures
The clearest single number for aerobic fitness.
VO2 max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise. It is one of the most useful measures of aerobic fitness and can help establish a baseline for endurance performance, cardiovascular conditioning and long-term fitness.
During the test, respiratory data, heart rate and workload are measured with the VO2 Master metabolic analyzer as exercise intensity increases. The result provides more context than a single score by showing how your body responds across the effort.
What You Can Learn
Data you can put to work in training.
Directly measured VO2 max or peak oxygen consumption
Heart-rate response across increasing workloads
Personalized intensity guidance and training-zone context
A baseline for endurance, hybrid and general fitness programs
Data that can be compared after a focused training block
Additional respiratory or threshold metrics included in the selected protocol
What Happens During the Test
A guided, progressive effort.
Complete a brief health and readiness screening and review the test protocol.
Put on the respiratory mask and heart-rate monitor while the equipment is checked.
Exercise on the selected treadmill or bike as the workload increases in controlled stages.
Continue to your appropriate maximal effort while the operator monitors the session.
Review your score, exercise response and how the findings apply to training.
Who Should Consider It
Useful from first baseline to peak build.
Runners, cyclists and triathletes building an endurance program
HYROX and hybrid athletes balancing strength and conditioning
Adults who want an objective cardiovascular fitness baseline
Clients focused on longevity and maintaining aerobic capacity
Coaches who want better data for training intensity and retesting
From Measurement to Better Training
A score is most valuable when it informs a program.
Endurance coaching can translate the findings into weekly volume, interval intensity and recovery decisions. Ventilatory and lactate threshold testing can add more detailed pace, power and zone guidance for performance-focused athletes.
Training Zones
Ventilatory & Lactate Threshold Testing
Map VT1, VT2 and detailed training zones, with an optional lactate add-on for a second physiological signal.
This is a fitness and performance assessment, not a diagnostic cardiac stress test. Clients with symptoms, significant medical concerns or exercise restrictions should seek appropriate medical clearance before maximal testing.
Your Report
See what you take home.
Your VO2 max and thresholds come back as a clear, visual report: your aerobic ceiling, your fuel-use curve across intensities, and the heart-rate and pace training zones built directly from your numbers.
Sample report shown for illustration. Your report is built from your own measured data. This is a design mockup, not a medical or diagnostic report.
Frequently Asked Questions
VO2 max testing, answered.
Is a lab test different from my watch estimate?
Yes. Wearables estimate VO2 max from heart rate, pace and other inputs. A metabolic test measures respiratory gases during exercise and provides a direct, controlled assessment.
Do I have to be an athlete?
No. Testing can establish a useful baseline for active adults, beginners and longevity-focused clients as well as competitive athletes.
How hard is the test?
A VO2 max protocol increases intensity until you reach an appropriate maximal effort. The operator explains the stopping criteria and monitors you throughout the session.
How should I prepare?
Follow the appointment instructions regarding food, caffeine, alcohol, exercise and medications. Arrive rested, hydrated and ready to exercise in appropriate clothing and shoes.
How often should I retest?
Retesting is most useful after enough time for training adaptation. Your coach can recommend an interval based on your program and goals.
